Distilled from the Antarctica WISE report
The polar ratings report.
Every grade on this page is lifted straight from the Antarctica WISE report — the full, independent assessment of the polar expedition fleet. We've pulled its raw ledger in and distilled the takeaways for the travelling reader: who leads each discipline, how the fleet trades comfort against field time, and every vessel's grade across all three lenses.
About the report
The Antarctica WISE report is published independently of every operator, line, and reseller it grades — no sponsorship, advertising, or commissionable placement touches a vessel's score. Every grade here is reproduced as published; the distillation is ours. The complete report — full methodology and every vessel's dossier — lives on the WISE study site.
Three lenses
How WISE reads a ship.
Every voyage is built on three essential anchors — the three lenses the report grades every vessel on, independently, so you can weigh the trade-offs that matter to you. Each is led here by the vessels that top the report's benchmark.
Drake Comfort Coefficient
Open-ocean stability and transit speed. A physics-based seakeeping index measuring hull stabilization, motion comfort, and crossing times across the Drake Passage.
Polar Luxury Index
Onboard refinement and service. Evaluating suite architecture, crew-to-guest ratios, fine dining, and wellness facilities—graded entirely independent of price tag.
Field Experience Score
Field capability and time on the ice. Measuring off-ship staging efficiency, Zodiac rotation speeds, and expedition guide density against IAATO operational caps.
Study map
The fleet, plotted.
Every cross-study vessel placed by its Field Experience and Polar Luxury grades, exactly as published in the report, tinted by fleet archetype — one map of the trade-offs the whole report is about.
Each axis spans equal grade bands — Field Experience from D to A+, Polar Luxury from E to A+. Bubble size reflects the Drake Comfort Coefficient, and colors mark each vessel's fleet archetype — the same chapters as the tri-grade ledger below. Hover over any vessel to preview its scorecard, or glide the cursor across the plot to open a magnifier over busy clusters; click any bubble to explore its full profile. Shared-grade ships are grouped in clusters.
Cross-grade ledger
Every vessel, three grades.
The report's full ledger, reproduced here — every cross-study vessel's three grades side by side, grouped into the archetypes that explain what a ship is really for.
