What is the Polar Luxury Index?
The Polar Luxury Index is an independent rating (0–100) quantifying the onboard hospitality product of a polar expedition vessel - entirely independent of fare price. Derived from hard hardware metrics and soft service standards, it evaluates private suite architecture, crew-to-guest ratios, culinary depth, wellness infrastructure, and public space refinement.
What it means for you
A+ · Exceptional
Reserved for travelers who treat the ship as an integral half of the journey. Universal butler service, expansive hydrotherapy spas, and zero-surcharge dining mean every onboard detail is covered by the baseline fare.
A · Very Strong
High-end finishes, exceptional lounge spaces, and refined culinary standards that stop just short of absolute extravagance — the ship as a polished destination in its own right.
B · Strong
Polished, generous comfort with an expedition-first edge — specialty dining, inclusive beverage programmes, and refined communal spaces that bow to purpose rather than pure polish.
C · Solid
Dependable comfort built around the expedition brief — clean staterooms, wine with dinner, and honest public spaces, with the fare's ambition directed ashore.
D, E & F · Moderate to Poor
Functional, warm, and built strictly for purpose. Choose these grades when your priority belongs entirely ashore—investing your capital in route length, remote itineraries, or specialized field access rather than suite square footage.

How the score is built.
Suites & Accommodation
The private realm — floorspace, balconies, materials, and whether the top categories are true residences or standard cabins wearing better names.
Crew-to-Guest Service
Attention made visible: staffing intensity, universal butler coverage, and a crew that anticipates rather than responds.
Dining & Beverage
The culture of the table — venue depth, open seating, included premium beverages, and how much of the experience carries no surcharge.
Spa & Wellness
Recovery as ritual — spa and hydrotherapy space, saunas, pools, and warmth measured per guest, not per brochure.
Design & Public Spaces
Atmosphere between landings — interior architecture, observation lounges, natural light, and the quality of shared space.
The method behind the score.
The Index in a audit - reading the distance between a floating residence and a base camp, one dimension at a time.
What Luxury Means at Sea
Luxury on a polar expedition is not a gilded lobby. It is returning from a wind-scoured zodiac run to a suite that receives you like a private sanctuary—a butler who remembers your tea, a rain shower that erases the cold, and a dining room that never presents a bill. The Index quantifies that feeling, and the hardware and staffing required to produce it.
The Suite as a Private Residence
Floorspace sets the baseline. An entry suite of 344 square feet speaks volumes about a vessel's baseline ambitions. We evaluate suites like a residential architect: proportions, natural light, balcony usability, material integrity, and whether upper tiers represent true residential architecture or standard cabins given promotional names.
Service as a Study in Attention
True service is invisible. It lives in staffing intensity, universal butler coverage, and guides who hand you a dry parka before you realize you are cold. The finest polar vessels approach private-yacht staffing ratios; base camps run one crew member for every three guests. The difference is legible in every interaction aboard.
Dining as Destination
Culinary culture is where ultra-luxury separates from ordinary. Ten venues with zero surcharge, and an all-inclusive whisky bar with 130 varietals signal uncompromising standards - versus a single buffet line and a pay-per-drink counter, which reveal exactly where a ship's ambitions end. We evaluate depth, inclusivity, and whether the table feels like an event or a refuelling stop.
Wellness as Recovery Infrastructure
In polar waters, wellness is not a treatment menu—it is recovery infrastructure. A snow grotto beside a hydrotherapy circuit, a glass-walled sauna at the waterline, and five thousand square feet of spa footprint turn a demanding voyage into a restorative one. We measure thermal space per guest, because a treatment room is just a room, but a recovery ritual requires space.
Atmosphere, Light, and Restraint
The great modern polar interiors speak fluently in Scandinavian restraint: pale woods, organic textures, and glass walls framing icebergs rather than competing with them. Design earns its rank through how it shapes life between landings—whether public rooms invite you to linger over the passing wilderness or merely wait in it.
Hardware and Design Over Rate Cards
The Index audits physical specifications and service execution, never the price on the brochure. A beautifully engineered, generously staffed ship that sells accessibly earns top marks; an overpriced charter of a aging vessel receives no pass for its rate card. Value is a separate conversation—this tool measures what the ship actually is.
